Belaro: Four-day work week can have problems
Compressed
work week should apply only to multinational firms and big companies that can
afford it. In the Philippines, most companies are categorized as small to
medium-sized enterprises.
One
problem I foresee with the four-day work week is when holidays fall on any day
during those four days.
It is my
position that when any kind of non-working holiday falls on any day in the
compressed work week, the employer must be allowed to make up for the lost work
day by having the employee report on one of the three rest days but at regular
day pay rate.
In this
situation, employers would be in a very disadvantageous position because under
current law they would be required to pay the holiday rate and the extra
working on a rest day rate. The law should be fair to both the employee and the
employer.
Another
problem I foresee is when different offices run on different work week
schedules because that can also cause workflow or production disruptions.
